Mechanical Metallurgy
SINTEFs research team on mechanical metallurgy has core competence on metal forming processes and the metallurgy related to forming of metals. With special focus on aluminium and magnesium, we have for several years, worked in close cooperation with Norwegian industry within development and optimalisation of metal forming processes as extrusion, rolling and forging. Our competence includes the whole value chain from fundamental understanding of physical metallurgy and plastic deformation, via modelling of the processes, to surface generation and characterisation and testing of the final product. Development of mathematical models as a mean for increased understanding of various metal forming mechanisms are an important part of our work. We have a strong multidisciplinary approach that also includes advanced metal forming tool technology. For characterisation and mechanical testing, we have well equipped laboratories at our disposal, and we can perform small scale pilot trials in our 800 tonnes laboratory press equipped for extrusion, forging and squeeze casting.
