The Casting Research Team consists of ten researchers and three engineers with core conpetence in foundry technology, metallurgy, applied mechanics, and thermodynamics. The research team is internationally recognized in areas like solidification microstructure, mushy zone mechanics, and casting defect formation. Most of the departments’ projects on casting are directed towards aluminium (DC casting and shaped castings), but we also have a significant and growing activity on casting of photovoltaic silicion. We have advanced og well-equipped casting laboratories at our disposal with e.g., equipment for low-pressure casting of aluminium and a casting machine for photovoltaic silicion. Mathematical modelling and simulation of industrial casting processes and experiments are an integrated part in our projects. We have close scientific collaboration with NTNU and with leading European, Australian, and US research communities within the field of casting.
