The industrial paint and coating market is undergoing substantial changes due to environmental regulations, where coat-effective nanoparticle modified paints and coatings will represent competitive products.

A new binder technology

A new binder technology for use in paint is developed at SINTEF. The technology is based on surface modified nanosilica particles [Modification of Polymers]. These additives are suitable to improve materials properties for alkyd coatings for outdoor house paintings: the drying time and hardness of high solid formulations and early water resistance for waterborne formulations, respectively. Other improved properties include curing, scratch resistance, UV-resistance and dirt pick-up. Lower VOC in the paint is also expected.
