Miniature sensor elements will usually not function on their own. In addition, the sensor elements need protection (mechanical and chemical), obtained by placing the sensor in a package. The sensor package gives the sensor a suitable shape or form factor, provides electrical connection to the sensor, and provides a window from the sensor to the outside world (for example a pressure or fluid inlet).
