Seaweeds
Seaweeds absorb nutrients from seawater for growth and may therefore be used for nutrient stripping in aquaculture. The approach is called integrated aquaculture. To successfully develop integrated aquaculture systems, it is important to cultivate native seaweed species that grow fast and have a marketable value. Seaweeds produce an array of bioactive compounds that may have applications in medicine, cosmetics or in the food and aquaculture industry. SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture are in particular focusing on seaweeds with antifouling and antibacterial activity.
